Evaluation Question Seven

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progressions from it to the full product?

The preliminary task was a continuity task involving filming and editing. We had to film a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, then exchanging a couple of lines of dialogue. The preliminary task demonstrated numerous techniques we had learnt, such as a match on action, shot reverse shot, and the 180-degree rule. The preliminary task was an important part of our coursework as it allowed us to have a visual idea of how we have improved between the preliminary task and the main task, as we can compare the two pieces and see what we have learnt. In the main task we were asked to chose a genre of a film and create an effective storyline to appeal to our chosen audience. The main task was to produce a maximum of the first three minutes of a film that we had planned productively.

During the preliminary task, I learnt how to edit footage properly. For example, I learnt how to import footage that we had filmed on the camera onto the editing software and how to put the clips in order. This was beneficial when we came to our main task as we knew to how to begin editing the footage properly. For example, when we imported these three clips to our editing software we knew how to put them in order and how to cut them so they were edited smoothly.

After the preliminary task, we had become more confident with our camera angles, therefore when we started our main task we attempted to use as many camera angles as possible. The preliminary task also drastically improved our filming and editing skills as when it came to our main task we could film a variety of shots and match them together smoothly. For example, in our film we edited a point of view shot and a close up.

After the preliminary task we also became to understand the meaning of different angles. For example, a low angle shot is used to make somebody appear intimidating and powerful, however, a high angle shot is used to make somebody appear vulnerable and submissive.
.

The preliminary task also learnt me how to match the audio with the clips correctly. We completed this in our preliminary task when we used a shot reverse shot editing technique. The audio didn't match when we started to cut the clips to a shot reverse shot, therefore we had to match the audio according to the clips. We did this by cutting the audio's and matching it to what the girls were saying on the clip.

We used the knowledge of what we learnt from the preliminary task about matching the audio and applied it to our main task. For example, in our main task we filmed us walking away from the camera, therefore the dialogue couldn't be filmed dietetically due to the fact it would be too quiet. Therefore, we had to record the dialogue separately from the clip and then edit it together to match.
