Evaluation Question 1 - Billie

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Narrative

Our media product has a non-liner narrative, this means the film is not in chronological order. The narrative is not liner because the majority of the film is a flashback. The film starts with two of our main characters Billie and Kirsty walking into a grave yard where they receive a text. This then gives them a flashback of the day that their friend got killed, the flashback starts with four girls Alice, Emma, Billie and Kirsty walking home from college, they then leave Emma to walk home alone as she lives in a different area. The other three girls then hear a loud scream and rush around the corner to find their friend with a stab wound. The girls then receive strange texts from an unknown number and the story comes back to Billie and Kirsty in the present time.

Genre

The genre of our film is a thriller film. The definition of this genre is that thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation, and anxiety. Our film looks a part of this genre because the main characters were being stalked by an unknown person and one of the four girls gets killed by this person.

Cinematography

In our film we used a range of shots such as medium close ups, two shots, hand-held shots and canted angles. We also use a shot reverse shot and an overhead shot. The use of medium close ups, two shots and shot reverse shots was to show the facial expressions and reactions of out characters whilst they are talking to each other.

It also shows the character’s feelings about the dilemma they are facing. The hand-held shot was used to show the shakiness in Emma to express the feeling of her being watched.
Furthermore, a canted angle was used as a point of view shot from Emma when Billie, Alice and Kirsty are running towards her lying on the floor.

Mise En Scene

Our film had three locations, one being outside of the graveyard that Emma is in, another being on the street where the girls walk home from college and one being inside of the unknown killer’s house, in the kitchen specifically.

The costumes that we used were just everyday casual clothes for Alice, Kirsty, Billie and Emma and then we had our killer in all black to accentuate the unknown. The only props we used were a knife, fake blood, liquid latex and scar wax to create Emma’s stab wound.
