Evaluation question seven

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

In the progression from our preliminary task I feel that I have learnt how continuity works and that due to this we applied in our film to ensure that we didn’t break it and it ran smoothly. The preliminary task helped me to learn how to use Premier Pro to ensure our films were edited properly.
Our main task was to create a new fiction film, which was around two minutes long. I think that due to the preliminary task we had a better understanding of how to successfully produce a film using the 180 degree line. The preliminary task also made us aware how to use match on action whilst editing. Our preliminary exercise allowed us to create a successful 2 minute film that when showed appealed to the target audience and had effective. I think as group we got better at noticing when continuity was broken, which enabled us to fix our errors and it also allowed us to edit things like a shot-reverse-shot more successfully.
The preliminary task contained simple and basic angles and shots, so when it came to our main task as a group we had the confidence to experiment with other more difficult angles that would improve our film, for example we used a canted angle. The preliminary exercise also helped us understand want certain angles were used for e.g. a high angle shows dominance.
I feel that overall there was big progression from the preliminary task to the full product, as we were all more confident and had come to grasp with the equipment in a way that allowed us to create a better product that would appeal to our target audience.

Evaluation question four

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for our film would be 15 to 25, who are often thrill seekers that enjoy getting scared. They are also sociable and prefer spending time with friends doing things like going to gigs or the cinema. The most enjoyed film genre by this age group is thriller and horror. The research allowed us to see that our film was more relatable to females, however males would enjoy the thrill it gave them.

The preproduction research we conducted was a questionnaire, which we handed out to randomly selected people mainly from our target age group, but some of which weren’t. The results of pre-production research allowed us gage a better understanding of who our target audience and what they enjoy, this helped us get an idea of how we could improve our film to engage them even more.

Overall, we feel we have been able to create a product that is enjoyed by our target audience due to the fact our characters are in the same age group and due to pre-production research as well as our own experience we were able to add in more elements that they enjoy.

Evaluation question two

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represents social groups in a quite stereotypical way. Many films of the physiological thriller genre use stereotypes like women being weak or men being the hero. Our film also uses these stereotypes as it represents a group of young women as weak and vulnerable.

The way our main character Emma goes from being shown as an equal to being shown looking up at the others from the floor, using a low angle shot shows that she has fully conformed to stereotype as she has lost all power and is now even weaker and less superior than the rest of the girls.

During our opening scene a close up is used to show the worried expressions of the two girls, this conforms to the stereotype of young women in psychological thrillers as they are shown to be vulnerable and intimidated especially by the unknown.

The killer in our project always remains unknown, however the title sequence suggests it could be a male which also imitates the gender stereotypes of the genre, as the killer is usually a man.

However, as the identity of the killer in our media project remains unknown to the audience it could be a woman, which would subvert to the expectations of stereotypes in the genre therefore it is unconventional and unexpected.
