Sounds in thriller films are used to create meaning to an audience, this will then enable the audience to create a response to the film. Thriller films include sounds that will build an understanding within the audience to what is happening in the film. The sounds are used to show the character's feelings and emotions to get a response from the audience. Sound is also often used to symbolise either the protagonist or the antagonist, by carefully using the sounds it can create the create the correct mood and atmosphere for the right character, it helps create suspense and tension.
Diegetic sound - this is sound that the characters can hear within the film for example, footsteps on a hard floor, voices from people talking, radios, dogs barking.
Non-Diegetic sound - this is sound that the characters would not be able to actually hear but we can for example incidental music or a voice over.
This is a video that explains diegetic and non-diegetic sound and it also compares the two.
Incidental music is something that is also something that is often used in thriller films. Incidental music is sound that reflects the feeling of a scene for example if someone is feeling happy there will most likely be happy upbeat music in the background of the scene.
